Let me just say first off, not really a big fan of the Chuck E Cheese establishment.

Had a bad experience there a few years back with my nephew and swore I would

never take my own kids there. As of today, my girls have only been twice.

Everytime we drive by I hear this..."Mommy when can we go back to Chuck E. Cheese?"

And I say..."Maybe on a rainy day."

No rainy day, but a great opportunity to help a local preschool raise some money.

We were invited by a friend and neighbor to join her and her two children for a

fun night of pizza, Chuck E. and lots and lots of games AND tickets.

This was the first wedding for both the girls to attend.

Caroline loved the wedding (Kenzie not so much) and they both

had a blast at the reception dancing with their cousins.

And of course, they loved the cake.

I didn't make it, but I have to tell you.

What A Day!

Yesterday was such a great day for my girls. Caroline lost her very first tooth and Makenzie has been released from care from her urologist after 3 1/2 years of surgeries, countless appointments and ultrasounds. God is good. We have been blessed with such wonderful care from Makenzie's doctor, Dr. Martin Keafer. He is so intelligent, caring and down to earth. He really cares about the well being of your children, not just the medical aspect of the child's illiness. I know there are a lot of other children out there with worse cases than Makenzie's, but just thankful for a great outcome yesterday. I wish everyone could have a doctor like Dr. Kaefer.

Caroline's tooth was really ready to come out Tuesday night.

She asked Roy to pull it which I can't believe. According to my parents,

Caroline is a lot like me when I was little. But I can tell you , I would have never

asked my dad to pull my tooth. Too chicken and I didn't want it to hurt.

Roy tried as best he could, but he just couldn't do it.

Lookie there... Miss Caroline woke up Wedneday morning, poked her tongue

on her tooth and there it went. She was so excited. Mauw (aka grandma) was here to see the whole thing.

It was like Christmas morning. Caroline was so gidding and excited. I can't blame her, it's a big

thing to loose your first tooth. Makes me sad though. My first born has lost her first baby tooth. :(

Mauw has worked for a pediatric dentist for more than 30 years and she knows the tooth fairy personally. Really she does. :) Caroline had a lot of questions for Mauw. Like, where does she live and how does she get in the house? All good questions. She lives at the dentist office and she uses pixie dust to fly through the house. The tooth fairy left Caroline some new markers which she was very excited about.

Yesterday, Makenzie also had her spring musical at preschool. She did a wonderful job. She is such a performer and has no fear about being in front of everyone. I will post the video soon.

He's also a golf pro

We have experienced a few days here and there of warm weather. Well, that gets my husband all sorts of giddy. He loves to play golf. During this time of year, he eats, sleeps and breathes it. Well, except when he is working of course. I think? I digress, sorry.

He purchased both of the girls a golf club for Christmas this past year. Pink for Caroline and purple for Makenzie. This is really the first time they have had a chance to try them out. What do you think? Is my golf pro doing a good job at teaching these girls the in's and out's of golf?

Roy special made this golf putter thingy last summer. The girls love to pull up there chairs and watch him putt and hit balls. I think they are pretty special now that they too can putt and hit balls just like daddy.

I asked Caroline if they talked about it being President's Day yesterday at school and she said yes. I asked her what she learned.

C- "Mommy, I think I only know two presidents now".

Me - "Who do you know?"

C- "George Washington and Aberton Lincoln."

I couldn't stop laughing. Aberton Lincoln.... I will have to look him up. :)

Later, we were reading Beauty and the Beast and got to the part where the Beast tells Belle not to enter the west wing. Caroline says...

C - "Mommy, where is our west wing?"

M - "We don't have a west wing Caroline."

C - "Why not mommy?"

M - "We live in a house not a castle."

She was satisfied with the answer thank goodness.

Caroline started art classes today. She loves to draw and do anything crafty. We have been talking for a while now about signing her up for a class. Today was her first class at the Art Studio here in our hometown.

I am so amazed at her first project. I can't stop looking it.

Winter Fun & Snow Days

Hello! Yes, we are still here. The past few weeks have been super busy with the holidays, visiting family, and then getting back to our normal routine after the holiday. I do hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We were able to be home on Christmas day and just have a relaxing day playing with all of our new toys. :) On New Year's Eve Roy and I went out with my brother and sister-in-law to the casino in Anderson and had a good time. Still in bed by 12:30am. That's my kind of party. I love my sleep too much. Way too much sometimes.

On New Year's day I had the privilege of making a Sweet 16 cake for my best friends daughter, Taylor. I have known Taylor since the day she was born and I was so happy to celebrate this milestone with her.

The weather here has been quite snowy here which means cancelled school days. The girls love it and so do I, but by the second day I am ready for our routine to get back to normal. This week we had two snow days. The girls begged me to play out in the snow (not my favorite thing to do - I have no boots either) so after 20 minutes of putting on all of our gear, we hit the snow.

They didn't last very long outside, maybe 30-40 minutes. They had fun and that's all that mattered. They received two snowball makers and a brick maker for Christmas from their aunt. They had a blast with those. Too bad they were too fast with the snowballs, I couldn't get any pictures. Maybe next time.

Kenzie loves to wait for Caroline to get off of the school bus everyday. This particular day last week it was raining. Yes I said, raining. Kenzie found this to be a the perfect opportunity to wear all of her rain gear. Cute polka-dot boots, cutie flower rain coat and her Hello Kitty umbrella. Doesn't she look adorable? I thought so too. When she heard the bus rounding the corner to drop off Caroline, she stripped down to her jammies and walked out to meet Caroline without any rain gear. Go figure!

Today was "School Spirit" day at school.

Caroline wore her RC Bulldogs hoodie that her Mauw

got her for Christmas. (She wasn't supposed to see it yet,

but they sent it home in her backpack. Oops!)

I love how she is getting into the spirit of school and

their mascot, the Bulldog.

When she got home from school today she asked for some easel paper and

a black and yellow crayon. She made her own

streamers to hang from her bedroom door.

How cute is that!

I don't think she has a clue that we could have bought

yellow & black streamers. I think it is awesome that she wanted to

make her own, just like her teacher did.

We had a great weekend. Actually an awesome weekend. It seems like we (Roy & I and the kids) haven't been able to spend much time together. Prior commitments, cakes, and Roy's busy schedule at work have kept us from spending some much needed family time together. Roy was really sick last week and I was getting a little stir crazy, so we decided to take a small family outing to Huber Farms. I have never been but have heard such great things about it. Hi there....long time no blog. The past month has been busy, busy, busy. We all have been super busy around here and it's only going to get busier as the holidays approach. Did I just say holidays? This can't be. Are we almost to Halloween (the girls have been asking for weeks) and then Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here before we know it. Wow!! This year has gone by so fast.

Roy has been really swamped at work. Most nights after the girls are in bed, he is up late working. He is stressed a lot of the times, but is thankful for his job.

I have been busy with cake orders, which I am so thankful for. This is what I have wanted to do for quite some time and am blessed to have been able to follow my dream. I've made a fall birthday cake, a goodbye cake (boo hoo), a green T-Rex cake, 200 cream cheese mints, a Rod End cake, Rootbeer cupcakes, and a 3-tiered Halloween Haunted House cake for this weekend. I have so far 4 more orders for November. Yeah!!

The girls have been busy with school and preschool. Caroline is reading like crazy and enjoys being part of the AR program. She loves telling me about her tests she takes. Funny! She always has a story to tell the minute she gets off the bus about another student doing something funny or getting in trouble. Makenzie loves being in preschool and can't wait to share her day with me as soon as I pick her up. We can't leave until she rips everything out of her bag to show me her arts and crafts, her library book or a note for me. My favorite is when she sings me the songs they have learned.

Roller Skating & Horsey Rides

We had a busy weekend but was still able to find some time to rest and relax. Attended a birthday party for a friend's son, Nate at the local roller rink. Neither of our girls have ever been roller skating and they both did excellent. Caroline really took off, without any help. Makenzie went through three pairs of skates and we finally found a pair that fit over her shoes. Thank goodness. We had a really good time and look forward to doing that again as a family.

Today we headed to Brown Co. State Park and had a picnic and then the girls did some horse back riding. Well, Caroline did anyway. Makenzie just watched and talked about all the poop. Go figure!

Big Girl #2

Makenzie started preschool yesterday. She had a wonderful day making new friends, getting to know her teachers and loving snack time (of course). We had a little trouble getting ready in the morning. For those of you who know Miss Makenzie well, she is kind of a "fashionista". She loves to pick out her own clothes and shoes and it totally drives me CRAZY.. She is only 2 - how can she know what she wants to wear? I gave her two choices the night before, she picked one that I liked, thank goodness, and then changed her mind in the morning. Well, mommy wasn't having it. It truly was a struggle to get her dressed. In the end, guess who won? That's right, Mommy. She looked so cute and she eventually got over not wearing her standard pink flimsy tank top and skirt. Hopefully when the cooler weather arrives we won't have this problem.

Wow, I didn't expect that answer. But she is right. She is getting so big, so fast. Before I know it, I will be putting her on the school bus for her first day of kindergarten.

Makenzie likes to "beauty shop" as she calls it. This basically means play dress-up or play with finger nail polish, etc... She has this favorite lip gloss and she recently lost it. Well today, while doing some cleaning, we found it again. Here is how our conversation went....

"Kenzie, guess what mommy found"?

"What"?

"Your lip gloss".

"I can't believe you found my lick gloss. I am so happy".

Yes you read correctly, lick gloss.

One other funny thing she is saying right now is ...placesnack instead of placemat.

Growing Up

Today marked a big day for my oldest daughter, Caroline. She is officially a kindergartner. I truly can't believe it. I remember moms always telling me how fast the time goes when your children are infants and toddlers, and I didn't always believe them. Boy, I do now. I can remember bringing Caroline home from the hospital and placing her in her crib for the first time. Rocking her all hours of the night because I didn't want to let go. When she had her first big ear infection (included a trip to the ER), her first Halloween costume, first Christmas and birthday. I remember alot of "firsts" and now I can add this one to the list.

Caroline was such a big girl today. She got out of bed with no problem, ate a great breakfast, we combed hair w/o a fight (thank goodness) and we walked to the bus stop for her very first bus ride. Oh my. The bus arrived and she got right on, only looking back for just a second. As the bus pulled away, I could she her walking to the back trying to find a spot to sit. Talk about breaking my heart. All I could think about was... could she find someone to sit with? Would she be scared? Would someone say, "You can sit with me". I headed to school as soon as the bus left (no I wasn't stalking it) to meet Caroline as she got off the bus at school. I had promised I would walk her to her room on the first day and I kept my promise. Of course I had a motive. I wanted to make sure she was safe and okay. And she was. As for me, I was okay too. Because she was okay. Our children will always seem small and child like to us, even as they get older. It's hard to remember how mature they are and that they can handle things we don't think they are old enough, or big enough for.

Caroline had a fantastic day at school. She is looking forward to returning tomorrow. I just hope wake up time is just as easy.

And to all my mommy friends who had this "first" today, great job moms. We did it!! :)

My friend Amy watched the girls for Roy and I one Tuesday while I was away in Chicago and they made this for me.

They made a huge cake out of paper, paints and markers. And Caroline wrote that they missed me. How cute is that? I love their little chef hats and their mixing bowls.

American Girl Place - Chicago

After my graduation last Friday, my mom and I took the girls into Chicago to shop at the American Girl Place store. All I can says is WOW!!! We have been wanting to do this for a long time and finally with me being in Chicago for class, it all worked out. When we made plans to do this, I asked my husband to make sure and pack Samantha (Caroline's Bitty Baby) and to make sure she was wearing clothes. Well to my dismay, all Samantha had on was a shirt and a diaper. You can't take a Bitty Baby back to it's original home with just a shirt and diaper, can you? Caroline didn't seem to mind so off we went.

The store is so amazing. A little girls (or big girl like me) dream. I could have easily spent the whole day looking around and could have easily spent a boat load of money in there too. Both girls had a great time looking around and Kenzie just couldn't keep her hands off all of the displays. I was afraid we would find a AG book hidden in Kenzie's diaper later. Ha!!

I let Caroline pick out a new outfit for Samantha and Makenzie received her first AG doll. She picked out a minature Julie. She just loves her. She sleeps with her and loves her long hair. Mauw (my mama) let Caroline pick out a new t-shirt for both her and Samantha. Caroline loves the fact that she and her bitty baby can match. She has worn her new t-shirt at least three times since we have been home.

Wilton Master's Course Class Cakes

Days 9 & 10

Day #9 was spent decorating my final class project, a 3-tiered cake. I arrived at school at 6:50am and did not complete my cake until 2:45pm. I skipped lunch and I don't believe I even stopped to pee. :) I was on a mission and did not want to loose my momentum.

The day went smoothly for the most part. I started from the top tier and worked down. The top tier was a brown basket weave and let me tell you, that brown took some time to color. I used almost 6 oz of color (with red added in to make it darker), 1/2 an hour to mix, and a ton of arm muscle to stir all that icing. The end result was exactly what I wanted. Thank goodness! I don't think I could have stirred that anymore. This was really what took a lot of my time, mixing the colors. I had everything sketched out on paper so I had a game plan.

The only problem I had was my last piece. I had made a rope handle for my basket and as I was turning it over to brush the cornstarch off, it broke in two pieces. I thought to myself if this is all that goes wrong today, then I can "handle" that. I ended up throwing it in the trash and Debbie, my instructor couldn't believe how calm I was and that I threw a perfectly good piece of fondant away. Oops.

I am really thrilled with how my final cake project came out. It is totally what I invisioned in my head. I love that when it happens.

Day #10 started off with a trip to Wilton Headquarters to tour the decorating room and the test kitchen. This was totally cool to see. If you have ever seen a Witlon publication, this is where it all happens. All the cakes, cookies, cupcakes, candies, brownies, etc... are decorated and photographed right here. There were no pictures allowed because they are working on the 2012 yearbook already. I felt like we were in a secret hiding place where we couldn't tell any secrets. Ha!!

After our tour we headed back to the classroom for a final demo on decorating with fondant. Lorena, the school kitchen supervisor had made us a great breakfast as well. She is a excellent baker. She made something for us everyday during break time to eat. Lorena made us coffee cake, sweet rolls, chocolate cake, apple turnovers, lemon cake, and many other goodies. And the best thing was, they were always hot from the oven. Yummy!! I would go back to class just to eat Lorena's goodies. :) At 11:00am, graduation began. The girls, my mom, and mother-in-law were there to support me. I was so happy to have my family there. I only wish Roy could have been there too.

I will never forget this experience. I learned so much from the insturctors and the other students. And I made a lot of new friends from all over the world. It's funny, I only learned of the course a few months back. I mentioned it to Roy and he was totally with me and supportive of my decision to pursue this. I owe alot to him and all of our friends and family who made it possible for me to go. For those of you who watched & took care of my girls, I can't thank you enough. To mom and Jeanie, I coudn't have done this without your support and love. I know the girls had a great time with you both as well. And to Roy, my biggest supporter yet, thank you, thank you, and thank you. I totally see tons of cake in your future. :) So with that said.....

Today was another busy one. I skipped lunch and worked a straight 11 1/2 hours preparing for my final project cake. (3 hours of that time was spent in my final gum paste class) I believe I am ready for tomorrow. The flowers are done, my basket handle is made, and the ribbon is on. I still have a TON to do tomorrow, but I confident I can get it done. I have a vision in my head. I just hope I can made my vision come to life.

Today we spent the morning doing a birthday cake. This cake is decorated with alot of the techniques we have learned over the past week and a half. It isn't your typical birthday cake. It was a great refresher and a great way to see our work on an actual cake and not on a flat board.

Not sure if I will get to post tomorrow night or not. I will do my best. The girls, my mama, and mother-in-law will be here to attend my graduation. I can't wait to see those girls. I miss them so much.

I want to send out a big shout out to all of my friends and family who helped Roy and I with the girls while I have been gone. I (we) couldn't have done this without your help and your support. I see a big thank you cake in your future. :) Also, a HUGE thanks to my wonderful husband who made this opportunity possible for me. I don't know how to say it enough, I LOVE YOU Boy!!

Day #7

Today was another busy day for me. We were given two hours to make additional items for our 3-tiered cake, shown how to attach flowers onto florist wire and then make a spray with them. We practiced our handwriting with boiled icing and then made preparations for our final cake project, such as measuring and stacking.

I am starting to get a little stressed now thinking of all of the items I still need to make for my final cake. I was able to make my bees and ladybugs this morning (they are so cute, picture below) and started making other flowers but the icing was not being nice to me. :) I still have to make my picket fence, and a ton more flowers.

I am also starting to wear down a little. I am a little exhausted at this point. I have had the time of my life here this past few days and wouldn't change anything about it. But I can honestly say, I didn't realize how draining this would be on me physically and mentally. I have seen icing and flowers, and cakes in my dreams. Great news though, my mom, mother-in-law and the girls are coming up to Chicago Thursday evening so they can attend my graduation on Friday morning. Yippee!! I am so excited about this, you have no idea. I wish Roy was able to come but he is super busy at work. After all the doings on Friday, we are taking the girls to the American Girl Store in downtown Chicago. I have been wanting to do this since Caroline was born. So... here we come. ( I better sell a cake soon to pay for my purchases to be at the AG store) .

Days 5 & 6

Well the weekend has come and gone by so fast. Friday was busy with class and then I was able to travel to Muncie for the weekend to visit with my most favorite girls, Caroline and Makenzie. I returned to Chicago yesterday around 4:00pm, checked into my hotel (much better than last week - yuck) and hit the road for a little shopping at IKEA. I knew what I needed and I was in and out of there is less than 25 minutes. That is a record for me. Since Friday evening was spent traveling, I wasn't able to blog so I am playing catch up right now.

On Friday, we learned a couple more flowers. The Primrose, Pansy (so fun), and Petunia. We also spent the afternoon icing our three tiers for our final project cake. I choose a 12" square botton tier, a 10" round tier, and a 6" top tier. These tiers are all made out of styrofoam. This might sound easy, but let me tell you, not so easy. This will take some practice for sure, but I don't really see myself selling many styrofoam cakes. (we are using these only for class purposes). This task was completed with a little stress but I did it.

Today we had two hours to prepare flowers for our project cake. I am still deciding extactly what flowers I want. Stay tuned for more info. :) We then learned the following flowers, the Mum, Daisy, Daffodil, and Bachelor Button.

We are still busy learning alot of fun techinques but it is time get busy and get our final project started. I have finally (after a few re-designs) decided what my final cake will look like. I have a lot to prepare for so I brought some items back to the hotel with me to work on tonight. I'm a busy, busy lady here. No lounging around for me. Ha!!

Today was not as intense as the past two days which was nice. I seriously don't think my brain could hold anymore information. We spent the morning practicing everything we learned from yesterday and then practiced a new border called a "Colonial Scroll" and the reverse version of that as well. It is an old school border which looks totally hard, but I actually kind of mastered this one. Finally!

The rest of the morning was spent learning how to fill, frost and torte a cake. And then is was time to learn how to assemble a tiered cake, along with dowel placement. I am sure I am boring you to death with all of these details, but it is nice to kinda go back in my mind and review the day. :) After lunch we worked with a new icing called "Royal Icing". This icing hardens fairly quickly and is a great tool to make certain types of flowers. We were taught three type of "Drop Flowers" (these are not really flowers you find in a garden, they are made up), Sweet Peas and Rosebuds.

Today was surprisingly relaxing but now I am starting to worry about my 3-tiered cake design I have to submit tomorrow. We are going to actually be graded on the techinques we are learning and will receive a diploma/certificate from Wilton if we pass. Please say a prayer for me. I'll let you know tomorrow what I decide.

My evening gum paste class was really fun tonight. We completed our roses and it was so awesome to see it come together. I think I could really get into this. It can be a little time consuming but so worth it. The final product is too awesome.

Wow, what a day. I am not as exhausted today but I am feeling a little sore. Sore you ask? How could someone who is spending their days playing with icing and cake be sore? I bet I got up out of my chair 50-60 times, and I am trying my best to sit up straight. That is killing me. My feet hurt too, but I have new tennis shoes to make it better.

Today we did some more borders, with a lot of string work. String work is delicate strands of icing that fall on the cake. It looks easy, but let me tell you, I am going to have to practice, practice, practice. Once I think I have it down, Sandy tells me..."Ooops, better work on this bit here". My favorite thing we did today was the basketweave. This is another one I thought looked difficult, but it is really easy. All of us seem to be having issues with the "Shell" border. The shell is used a lot in many different ways. My hope is to master this by the end of the week.

Tonight I attended a fondant figure class. We covered a round cake board in green fondant, split it into three seperate sections, and then put some embelishments on two of the sections. One will be a farm yard, another the beach, and then a grassy area. After this we made a monkey and a lion. This was so, so fun. It was like playing with play-doh, only for big kids.

Well, day #1 is in the books. I managed to pay attention for 12 hours on just 4 hours of sleep. I just could not sleep last night. I guess the antipication of today was getting to me. Plus, I miss my hubby and the girls. I only talked to them, I think, maybe 3 times today. If I haven't said it yet, I miss them sooooo much.

Today was absolutely great. There are about 18 women in class with me. More than half are from different countries around the world. We have some from Korea, Spain, South Africa and the Canary Islands. Wow! How awesome that these women have traveled so far to reach their dreams.

We covered quite a bit today such as, making boiled icing (interesting, but I think I like it) and 8 different borders. Or there might have been more, not sure. I thought at one point my head was going to explode from information overload. Below I have posted pictures of everything we did today.

Wilton offers supplemental courses during the time the Masters Course is going on. I signed up previously for "Fondant Figures" and "How to start your own business". Today the opportunity came up for me to take a 4-night "Intro to Gum Paste" course. I am so, so excited about this. I can now make (of course, with more practice) all kinds of different flowers for wedding cakes, etc.. Pictures are posted below.

Well, I made it safely to Chicago today. It took me a little over 4 hours to get here. Let me tell ya, either I drive like an old woman or they have given out special licenses for people to drive like Maniacs. I was getting passed left and right. I just kept saying to myself... I'll waive to ya when you get pulled over.

Anyway... I have checked into my hotel, found a grocery near by to get some essentials for the week, a Kohl's (gotta have a Kohl's near me or I just don't feel right) and bought some new tennis shoes, found out where my classes will be, and now here I am, without my girls or my husband. I am missing my girls so much already I can't stand it. Sad I know, but they are like an extra limb to me. Always at my side. I know we all will get through this time apart and the girls will have fun with all of their friends and their grandparents. As for me, I will try my best to make this dream a reality this week. Hopefully, I will grasp all that is taught and finaly master that Wilton rose!!

My goal is to update my blog every evening after class is over. Stay tuned...there is a lot more "Icing on the Cake" to come.

Everyday it gets closer, Caroline reminds me of how big she is getting.

Hello all... it's been quite awhile since I have posted to my blog. I love this time of year, the hot summer days for swimming and eating slushies, sweet corn, spending time with family and friends and all of the kids numerous activities. But all of this can leave a mom pretty tired. Isn't it funny, we shouldn't be tired, the kids should be. Oh no, not mine. They keep going and going like little Energizer Bunnies. They are sleeping peacefully in their beds right now and mommy actually has time to read a few blogs and to update her own blog.

As you have noticed, I made a little name change. The name change has two meanings for me. First of all, being the mama to two beautiful girls is definitely THE ICING ON THE CAKE. And secondly, I leave soon for my two week Master's Course at Wilton's Decorating School. I am going to be buried in icing, learing all kind of techniques to decorate cakes. I have always liked to bake and only dreamed of owning my own bakery. With the support of my wonderful husband, hopefully this dream will become a reality. Of course, right now, it's only baby steps to my dream. Baby steps to big dreams, right?

So... I hope you will keep returning to my blog to see the every day life of a stay-at-home mom to two crazy girls and see some of my cake creations.

It's only the middle of June and I feel like we have done so much already this summer.

We have:

1. Had the water slide out several times already (the heat has been unbearable some days)

2. We spent the night out in our tent in the back yard

3. Have had several playdates

4. Caroline has completed one of two summer camps

5. Had many picnics

6. Had two garage sales and a lemonade stand

7. Caroline had her kindergarten screening

8. I walked in the Relay for Life to honor my baby brother Frank

9. Attended two Clover Bud craft days

10. Made several cakes

11. Roy has played alot of golf

12. Caroline has learned how to play basketball and soccer at mini-camp

This is just the beginning of summer. I think we are ready for a day (or two) of rest. I know mommy could use a day just to catch up on a few household duties. Hey, it's summer time, that stuff can wait, right? We still have a ton of activities to enjoy before school starts. Only 50 some odd days until my oldest starts kindergarten. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

Here is what is still to come for my busy bee family...

1. Caroline will attend dance camp soon

2. We are hosting a 4th of July bike parade at our home

3. Roy, Caroline and I are putting several items in the fair for 4-H

4. I will be attending a two week course near Chicago for cake decorating

5. Roy and I celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary in July

6. All this and still trying to squeeze in a family vacation

I will try my best to keep up with my blog (I know it's been awhile) and with my kids. I hope you all have a wonderful summer keeping up with your busy bees. :)

Hello there! It's been a while since I have posted on my blog. Life has been crazy busy around here in the Smith household - preschool and Mops functions, business trips for Roy, rummage sales, play dates, cake decorating and the doings of our everyday life.

I can't believe Caroline will have her last day of preschool this week and that in just a short 2 1/2 months she will be entering kindergarten. The time has flown by so fast. I am so proud of her. She has excelled in preschool, already reading, writing, and she is so inquisitive. That girl can't go 2 minutes without asking me a question, about any and everything. Half the time I have to reply, "I think we need to ask daddy the answer to that one". I know she will do well in school but I will miss her so much.

Makenzie will finish her first year of preschool tomorrow. She has made some good friends at preschool, their names are Ava and Leo (pronounced Layo) and she loves her teachers Miss Karen and Miss Gayle. I feel she has learned alot but am anxious to get to over to the preschool Caroline attended for the past three years. There is just something about familiarity that makes things seem better. I know she will excel there just as Caroline did. Makenzie loves to sing, loves to wear dresses and pjs (the minute we get home), princesses and Chex Mix. I know for sure she will have her new teachers on their toes next year.

Okay, the point of this post was this... the pictures posted at the top. I have been having the hardest time lately getting blogspot to do what I want. I think I need some training. I wanted the pictures here, but can't get them to move.

Caroline celebrated her 5th birthday in style. She had a friend party on April 17th, then on her actual birthday, April 22nd, we went to the local children's museum for some fun and then she had a program/musical at preschool. Later that evening, she was treated to dinner at Chili's by her grandmother. On the 23rd, it was her "special day" at preschool and she brought mini ice cream sandwiches to share with her preschool friends. Then on Saturday, April 24th, her entire family came to celebrate the big day. Wow, one girl, turning five, with four parties. That's excitement.

I took the girls to the local children's museum today. They have a really neat area to do arts and crafts. I asked the girls if they wanted to go down to the arts table and they both agreed. Caroline sat at one table to do a flower craft with muffin cups and Kenzie sat down at another table to do some scissoring.

This was a conversation Caroline and I had on our way home from the grocery store this evening. I got to thinking that maybe she would like to see mine and Roy's wedding video. I asked her and she said sure. We watched the video when we got home and she couldn't believe how little her cousins were and she kept asking where she was. I don't think she quite understood, but that is okay. Kenzie kept running around saying to Roy..."Mommy is getting married."

Okay, so it's been a while (again) since I have blogged. I have a few holidays and celebrations to catch up on. Things have been busy in the Smith household lately. I have been planning Caroline's friend b-day party, taking the second course of the Wilton cake decorating class at Hobby Lobby, running here and there to preschool and playdates and lastly I got sick last week. Don't they know (whoever "they" are) that the mommy can't get sick. They whole world comes to an end when mommy can't function. I guess my point is, I haven't blogged in a while because I have been busy, busy, busy.

We spent Easter in Muncie at my parents house. Here are a few pictures of the girls and my nephew Cole, decorating Easter eggs.

Cole Ray decorating eggs. This also happened to be the night of the NCAA Final Fours games. My husband who is a Butler grad, was of course cheering for Butler and my nephew was cheering for Duke. They both made eggs with the words Butler and Duke on them. They kept threatening to crack each others eggs.

Easter Eggs, Blossoms, and Hop Scotch

The girls and I spent the afternoon outside in the beautiful weather hanging Easter eggs on one of our trees in the front yard. We had never done that before and it was fun to see how the girls would hang the eggs on the tree. At one point, one little tree limb had 5 eggs on it. {Mommy moved them around when the girls weren't looking.}

We have a few trees that are starting to bloom. The girls have been checking them

everyday to see how much the buds have changed.

It is fun for me to see their enthusiam - watching Mother Nature come to life.

We then got out the sidewalk chalk and Caroline made a hop scotch all by herself.

It was a little small and lop-sided, but she did a great job.

Hello all! It has been quite awhile since I have sat down at my computer to blog. A lot has been happening in Auba's World. We have had many birthday celebrations this month and they continue on into April with Roy, my mother-in-law Jeannie, and Caroline. Both of the girls were on spring break from preschool and we kept pretty busy with a lot of fun activities. I am so thankful we had nice weather during that week. We spent a lot of time outside and at the park. Caroline had her 5-year pictures taken a week ago and they are so adorable. And lastly, I started the first course of The Wilton Cake Decorating class offered at Hobby Lobby. There are four courses and my plan is to take all of them. I start course three on April 8th. Yes, that seems out of order but the second course is on Wednesday's when Roy plays golf. Priorities people! The third couse is the one I am looking most forward to. It is all about learning to work with fondant and tiered cakes. I am really hyped about these classess. My hope is to do cakes while the girls are at school to make some extra cash but still be available to volunteer in their classrooms and tag along on some field trips.

Last Thursday, Makenzie's preschool held an Art Show and Book Fair to help raise funds for the preschool. Makenzie was so excited for all of us to go to her "Big School" and see all of her projects. She kept saying all day, "We going to my big school to see my crafts". It was so darn cute.

This was such a neat way for the preschool to showcase the childrens art/craft works that they do in class every week. The children were so proud and loved showing their parents and siblings all of the fun things they have been doing in school.

Caroline and I ran some errands this evening and of course one of our stops was Walmart. She asked me why Walmart was called WalMart. Here is our conversation...

Caroline..."Mommy, why is it called Walmart?"

Me..."Because the man that opened the first Walmart was named Sam Walton so I am sure he wanted to use his name in the store somehow, so he called it Walmart."

Caroline..."No, I think it is named Walmart so you don't forget to bring your Wal-let." get it{wallet}

We spent the weekend in Muncie celebrating my family's March birthdays. We have three in total. My nephew Mason, turns 8 this week, my sister-in-law Mandy, and then me later in the month. (notice I left Mandy's and my age out - that is on a need to know basis) It is also Makenzie's half birthday, which happens to be on my birthday as well.

We always celebrate together with a no non-sense meal, yummy bbq, veggies & dip, potato salad, chips and of course CAKE. We all always have such a good time, telling stories and catching up. It is so hard living away from my parents and brother and keeping up with everyone's lives. I love this time when we can all be together. The best part is all the cousins playing and laughing together.

We had the pleasure of spending time with good friends on Friday night and our host made the most delicious soup. I am sure she won't mind if I share the recipe with you. Spread the love, right?

ITALIAN VEGETABLE SOUP

1 lb ground beef
1 cup diced onion
1 cup sliced celery
1 cup sliced carrots
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 - 16 oz can tomatoes
1 - 15 oz can tomato sauce
1 - 15 oz can kidney beans
2 cups water
5 tsp tsp beef bouillon granules
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp sweet basil
1/2 sp oregano
1 tsp salt
1 T dry parsley flakes

Brown beef & drain grease - add water, vegetables and spices. Cover and simmer 20 minutes.

ADD:
2 C shredded cabbage
1 C green beans (I usually add a pint)
l/2 C macaroni

Bring to boil, lower to simmer till tender. To serve, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

The Long and Short of It

It was my turn to put Caroline to bed tonight. We settled in with some books and began our nightly routine. She picks out three books, I read and she asks ALOT of questions. I love that about Caroline. She is always so interested in more than the words on the page. Our first book tonight was The Penguin Who Wanted To Be Different. The main ~~character~~ penguin in the book is named Dorothy. Sometimes her Uncle calls her Dot or Dottie. Caroline was a little puzzled about Dorothy's other names.

"Mommy, why does her Uncle call her Dot when her name is Dorothy?"

"Well, Dot is short for Dorothy. It's like a nicname. You know how your little sister's name is Makenzie?

"Yes."

"And sometimes we call her Kenzie."

"Yes."

"Kenzie is short for Makenzie. Do you understand?"

"Yep"

We continue to read the story and some new ~~characters~~ penguins appear in the book and one of their names is Rory. Caroline immediatley stops me and asks...

"Is Rory long for Roy?"

I had some leftover blue icing from my Colts helmet cake I made last week and thought it would be fun to make some cupcakes and let the girls try their hand at cake decorating. Plus, we had to try out their new aprons that Mauw made. Don't they look so cute?

I made a batch of pink icing and Caroline had to lick

the beater of course.

Yummy!

So far, so good.

Kenzie's plan of attack was to first take a huge bite out of her cupcake and then decorate.

Valentine's Day Love

The girls received a very special package in the mail this week from their Mauw and Papaw for Valentine's Day. They both love getting mail, but getting a huge package - AWESOME. They each received a pad of stickers, a foamy craft and these adorable, oh so cute...

Colts Superbowl Cake

I have been seriously thinking about getting back into cake decorating. Some 15 years ago, a friend and I took a Wilton Cake Decorating class at JoAnn Fabrics. It was the beginner course, and we learned the basics of cake baking and decorating. We learned trickes on how to ice the cake smoothly, create borders, place characters on sheets cakes and make those beautiful roses Wilton is so known for. Unfortunetly, that was the one thing I couldn't master. I'll leave the roses for someone else. :) I had quite the little cake business going on for awhile. I was making cakes for every ocassion and for anyone I knew. I slowly got out of cake decorating because life caught up with me. In the form of one husband Roy, and two little girls Caroline and Makenzie. :) I have thought on many occassions of getting back into cake decorating. I have made the girls birthday cakes every year since their birth but that has been the extent of my cake baking/decorating the past five years.

Well, the cake decorating bug has hit me again. I love watching Ace of Cakes on the Food Network and I am amazed at their abilities to creative such beautiful works of art. I am way far off from doing anything like that but would love to learn the art of fondant and gum paste. I have spoke of this to Roy and he even went to the links of giving my info the Culinary Arts Institute of Indianapolis. This was very thoughtful of him, but it would have been nice to have a heads up about this. You see, they have been calling me and I am like, how on earth did you know I was thinking of pursuing this? I told Roy about my conversation with a respresentive from the Arts Institute and his reply was this..." Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, I sent them your info." A little heads up would have been nice. Maybe when the girls are in school full-time, I will think about heading back to school myself. But in the meantime, I think I will work on making this dream of mine a reality. I have been searching the web for cake ideas, how-to's and discovered that Provo Craft, the makers of the Cricut are coming out with a Cricut Cake machine, specifically for cake decorating. Yipee!! I saw an internet ad on this and fell in love instantly. {Can't wait for May to get here so I can get my hands on this little machine.} I have been to our local library and checked out books on cake recipes, cake decorating and more how-to's and have been combing the aisles of Hobby Lobby and JoAnn Fabric for new, fun supplies.

On one of my trips to Hobby Lobby I discovered this cake pan. And with our Indianapolis Colts in the Superbowl this year, I just had to have it.

Here are a few pictures of my journey back in to the cake decorating world.

1) Football helmet pan filled with Pillsbury white cake mix.

2) All the ingredients for white royal icing.

3) Batch #1 of icing.

I love my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. Couldn't make cakes and/or icing without it.

4) Helmet cake is cooled and ready for icing.

I first put a thin layer of icing on the cake to "crumb' coat it.

5) "Crumb" coating is done. Now onto the details of the helmet.

6) Don't forget to add the border around the bottom.

7) Finished product.

Toy Story fever that is. The girls are totally addicted to both Toy Story and Toy Story 2. My not quite 2 1/2 year old daughter can quote lines from the movie. My husband is on the count down to Toy Story 3 in June. I can't wait to see Roy and the girls head out for their very first daddy-daughter date. Of course, I am sure I will have lots pictures and most definitely have to blog about it. :)

Caroline wanted to play "Toy Story" before bed and insisted that Roy be "Woody". She would be "Jesse" and Kenzie wanted to be "Zurg"

Well, we didn't have a "Stinky Pete" so Caroline asked Roy to draw one and put it on a ceral box just like in the movie. Of course, Stinky Pete isn't on a cereal box in the movie (he's is in his original box, mint condition), so he had to improvise. I think Roy did a great job improvising.

Another great but crazy day here in Auba's World.

We had another cold winter day here in Indiana which means we were inside (~~AGAIN)~~ enjoying the day. I asked the girls if they wanted to doing some painting and I got a great big YES MOMMY, OH YES. Point taken!!

So... I got out the drop cloth, paper, paint brushes, tons of paints, and of course their oh-so-cute matching smocks from IKEA. (I love IKEA! Have I ever told you guys that before? Ha!)

Makenzie's surgery at Riley

On Friday, January 15th, our youngest daughter Makenzie was admitted to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis to have a Right Ureturalectomy & Right Uretural Reimplant. What is that you ask? Basically she had the two ureters on her right kidney connected together and place correctly into her bladder. This has been an issue since before Makenize was born. We have been to Riley off and on since her birth for various tests and consultations with our pediatric urologist, Dr. K. The day finally arrived and we headed off to Riley for a weekend getaway, so to speak.

Poor baby had no idea what was about to happen.

Very upset after the nurses made her take off her beloved princess nightgown.

She was not fond of the peach scrubs they gave her.

Lots of neck hugs for mommy before they took her to the OR.

Thank goodness she found a nurse she really liked and went

willingly into the operating room. That made me feel a little better,

although I cried like a baby when they took her from me.

In the recovery room. I couldn't believe all the tubes

and wires that were connected to her. She really

hated having those cuffs on her arms.

She was so brave.

Saturday morning in her crib at Riley. She slept really

well Friday night, probably because she was so drugged

and loopy. I stayed with her in her crib for 12 1/2 hours.

She wanted to cuddle and be close the entire time we were there.

Makenzie stayed at Riley until Sunday afternoon at 1pm. She had to go home with a catheter and two stints coming from her bladder. She is recovering at home and doing very well. We are happy to have our happy, heathly little girl back home with us.

Thank you all so much for your phone calls, emails, cards and dinners during Makenzie's surgery and recovery. You all don't know how much we all appreciate your prayers, thoughtfulness and love. It will never be forgotten.

Freshly Squeezed

Is there anything more yummy in the morning than freshly squeezed orange juice? I don't think so. Well, maybe a fresh hot Krispy Creme donut - yum-o. (Sorry, I got sidetracked dreaming of donuts.) We go through a can a day of orange juice in my house. My husband and both daughters love orange juice, ALOT. Recently we received a huge box of oranges from the dentist my mom works for - he sends them every year. Thanks Dr. Hub!!! There were a total of 24 oranges. I'm talking a huge box. I don't think we could of eaten 24 oranges before they wouldn't be good anymore so we made freshly squeezed orange juice. Caroline was my big helper and loved using the juicer. She is so strong, stronger than I thought for sure. It takes some arm muscles to squeeze 48 orange halves.

Roy and I took the girls to our local indoor playground/gymnastics center this weekend. We had a lot of energy we needed to burn off from being couped up for 2 1/2 days. They had a ball. And I think the rest of our hometown felt the same way. The place was packed. Caroline had some new gymnastics moves she liked showing off.

We had another snow day here in Indiana which meant no school for the girls. I try my best to keep them occupied with things to do but today was a lazy day with lots of movies & down time. Some days I just can't muster up the strength to play, play, play all day long. I set the girls up in their camping tent in the living room with lots of fluffy pillows and blankets (this seems to be a reoccuring theme this week, doesn't it?) some oj and a cup of goldfish. They were content to watch Monsters Inc. and I got some much needed work done around the house and with Mops.

Here is one conversation I had with my oldest today...

"Mommy, can I have some more orange juice?"

"Not right now Caroline, it's getting too close to lunch. Can you wait until then?"

"Please mommy, I want more orange juice now."

"Not right now. You have to wait."

"If I was the mommy, I would give my kids orange juice and grape juice all day whenever they asked for it."

"You would, would you? Well, I guess that makes you the best mommy in the world Caroline."

"The bestest mommy."

"Yep, the bestest. But you still arent' getting any orange juice right now."

"Oh, alright then."

Fun times around here today.

Roy brought home a PS2 game for he and Caroline to play this weekend. It's been so funny to watch her learn how to use the controller and then tell Roy what to do.

What a Fun Day in the Snow!!

The girls and I were invited to a friends house today for a playdate and because we were so blessed with tons and tons of snow, we decided to put on all of our snowgear and enjoy a nice brisk walk. We put on the following... two layers of pants, long socks, turtlenecks and sweatshirts, snowpants, jackets, hats and gloves. Oh ya and boots. Geez... it took me 30 mintues just to get the girls ready. Once they were all suited up they had to wait on mommy to get ready. They were getting impatient so I opened the garage door so they could play in the driveway. I looked out and they were gone. I rushed out and there they were making snow angels in the frontyard. Oh how cute it was.
